The story of Gloria
The long story of Gloria started in the same years as Helsinki got many of its most iconic buildings: for instance the Parliament House, and the very first swimming hall of Finland, the one on Yrjönkatu.
A unique awakening to a new era
The main architect of the building was Georg Thure Nummelin, who had previously designed several buildings to the newly independent Helsinki as well as the for St Petersburg. For Gloria and its block, Nummelin worked together with Uuno Varjo, who is also known for his work as the structural designer of the Olympic Stadium, one of Finland’s most loved altars for sports.
The architectural styles of the 1920s and 30s are still visible in the exterior of the property, in the beauty of staircases, and in the spacious interiors. The monumental façade is adorned by arcade windows, and art deco paintings enrich the staircases. On the Yrjönkatu side of the property overlooking the rooftops is the Gloria tower, that catches the eye on the hillsides of the city.
